History of Hawaiian Shirts
The first Hawaiian shirts were made in the 1930's by a tailor in Honolulu. In 1947 the city government of Honolulu actually encouraged people to wear Hawaiian shirts and Hawaiian dresses between June and October as a way to beat the summer heat. Through the decades, movie and television stars such as Burt Lancaster, Ginger Rogers, Elvis Presley, and Tom Selleck have popularized these shirts and dresses. Aloha wear is everyday-wear in Hawaii where it is hot all year. For more information and background about Hawaiian dresses and shirts, visit our Fun Stuff section.
